About This Item

This is an amazing Civil War set, "THE PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR" - complete set in ten volumes. 1911 1st edition; The Review of Reviews Co.; New York. Profusely illustrated - the set contains "Thousands of Scenes Photographed 1861-65, with Text by Many Authorities" (there are 3,389 photographs in all). Per American historian and journalist Allan Nevins, this set "still remains the major source for photographs of the Civil War; the greatest single collection of (Mathew) Brady illustrations." The New York Times wrote that Mathew Brady had brought "home to us the terrible reality and earnestness of war." Gilt top page edges. Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 5 each have a full-page map at the front (volumes 1, 2, and 3 also have a full-page map at the back). Volume 10 has a comprehensive Index at the back. A must-have set for any Civil War library. ** Please note that due to the heavy weight of the set (it weighs approximately 43 pounds when boxed), additional shipping charges will be applied **

The content is grouped as follows:
VOLUME 1: The Opening Battles
VOLUME 2: Two Years of Grim War
VOLUME 3: The Decisive Battles
VOLUME 4: The Cavalry
VOLUME 5: Forts and Artillery
VOLUME 6: The Navies
VOLUME 7: Prisons and Hospitals
VOLUME 8: Soldier Life / Secret Service
VOLUME 9: Poetry and Eloquence of Blue and Gray
VOLUME 10: Armies and Leaders

Condition:
Some light soiling and staining to the covers and spines. Volume 3 has a thin, 4" stain line at the bottom-right corner. Nine of the volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. Some of the covers are shaky despite not having a visible crack. Volume 3 has a visible crack at the front hinge between the map and frontispiece. Volume 10 has a visible crack between 2 of the Index pages. Nice interiors - the pages are mostly clean with an occasional small, light smudge or stain found. An occasional page at the front has some light foxing. There are some small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of some of the spines. Bright gilt top page edges. Overall the set is in Very Good- condition.
