Offered is a first edition, first printing, of "Philosophy of Trade Unions: An Essay Devoted to the Interests of the Thousands who, in the Daily Struggle for Labor's Rights, do Battle for the True Freedom of the Human Race" by Dyer D. (Daniel) Lum published on July 1, 1892 by the American Federation of Labor at 14 Clinton Place, New York City. A pamphlet measuring 5-7/8" by 8-7/8" and containing 24 pages including front and rear covers. The topics discussed are: Industrialism; Trade Unions a Protest; Its Conscious and Unconscious Growth; Federation and Solidarity; Its Militant Character; Its Logical Position; Its Relation to the Scab; Its Attitude to Non-Unionists; Its Industrial Ideal; Its Possibilities. Condition: covers detached but present and show tiny chips along detached edges, small chip to upper edge of front cover; covers and pages age-toned given the paper stock used; small, clear-embossed stamp of Bowdoin College to title page; staples lightly age-rusted; overall in very good condition considering its age and fragility. Rare. Dyer D. (Daniel) Lum (February 15, 1839-April 6, 1893) was a leading anarchist, syndicalist, and poet. He was the mentor and lover of fellow anarchist Voltairine de Cleyre who, according to de Cleyre, assisted in the suicide of Louis Lingg by smuggling into his prison cell the dynamite cap that would end his life - on November 10, 1887, the day before he was to be executed, along with August Spies, Adolph Fisher, George Engel, and Albert Parsons, after having been convicted of conspiracy in relation to the bombing at Haymarket Square on May 4, 1886.
