About This Item

Boston: Otis, Broaders, and Company, 1839. First Edition Thus. . Full-Leather. Very Good/Issued Without Jacket. Abercrombie was an early 19th century Scottish physician, author and philosoper credited today for the first work on neuropathology as well as several other medical works. In 1830, he also published "Inquiries Concerning the Intellectual Powers and the Investigation of Truth," which he followed in 1833 by a sequel, "The Philosophy of the Moral Feelings." Though neither work showed much original thought, they were quite popular in academic circles of the time and were re-issued several times. This edition of "Moral Feelings, published in 1839," with an introductory chapter "with Additions and Explanations," by Jacob Abbott, a well-known New England author as well as a minister and educator, was intended to "adapt the work to the use of schools and academies." while presenting the original treatise in its entirety "without alterations or omissions." First Edition Thus (appears to be first printing). About 4 x 7 inches, 250 pages bound in full leather with "Abbott's Abercrombie/Moral Philosophy" in gold lettering in a black box on the spine. Boards' corners are lightly bumped with leather darkened by age, soiling and wear. Top edge of spine shows minor chipping, o/w no other significant flaws. Inside front cover has sticker from Rochester, NY, bookseller, and fep shows handwritten statement that the book belonged, at one point, to a school district library. Inside cover and fep also contain some faint writing indicating other owners. Hinges are intact and binding is firm. Scattered foxing and staining throughout text, which is complete and completely legible. Overall, a scarce copy which has survived more than 175 years in remarkably good condition.
