Petition

From Messrs. Holcomb and Henderson, Messrs. Hooker, Pridham and Company, and Mssrs. Jones, Macdonnell, and Company, three separate Firms of Forwarders and Ship-owners praying that as a Government has ended public aid to the Grand Truck Railway Company to enter into injourious competition with private parties, it may in a like manner extend assistance to all persons engaged in the business of Forwarding, by relieving them from the payment of Tolls upon Vessels and Merchandise passing through the Saint Lawrence Canals between Montreal and Prescott.

Presented to the Legislative Council 13th May, 1857

500 copies.

Very important petition by representatives of Firms of Fowarders and Shipowners to be equally treated with Railroad companies with respect to the subsidies allocated and the assistance given, and not by one stroke be sacrificed to the Railway interests of Canada. Tolls payable between canals should be eliminated.
