TITLE CONTINUED: Pour la commodite des Laiques, & particulierement des Personnes qui aident dans les Campagnes a chanter l'Office divin. 2 works bound in 1, 1749. Mostly Latin text apart from headings and contents tables which are in French. Small 8vo bound in sixes and twelves, approximately 165 x 90 mm, 6½ x 3¾ inches, musical notation throughout, title page with publisher's device, some small head- and tailpieces, pages: [2], 1-327, [1], 1-36, 1-84, 1-212, XIX; 1-24, 1-123, [9] - last page with Cession du Privilege. Bound in contemporary speckled calf, raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments, label missing, all edges red, marbled endpapers. Binding slightly rubbed, especially on spine, spine glued down at sometime, 10 mm (½") split to top of upper hinge, slight wear to corners, pale staining to endpapers, small chip to margin of A3 neatly repaired, small closed marginal tear neatly repaired to D4 and E8, no loss of print, marginal closed tear to F8 neatly repaired, no loss, 3 lower corners torn off, no loss, small hole to 13 leaves, affecting a few letters and words, some marginal worming to last part, most neatly repaired with archival repair tape, no loss, 5 leaves with brown stain in outer margins, not affecting text, a few other minor faults. A good clean tight copy. No first or early copy listed in Library Hub Discover, one only in the Bibliotheque Nationale (the library of Caen (1749). Small volumes with small print, approximately 120 x 65 mm, 5 x 2½ inches, engraved frontispiece and title page to each volume, coat of arms with motto "honi soit qui mal y pense" to each title page, pages: 1-443; 1-430, bound in full plain morocco, gilt titles to spines, blind decoration to the end of each raised band, double rules to dentelles, gilt rule to edges of covers, edges stained red. Spine of Volume 2 slighty faded, a few light stains to covers, pale browning to frontispiece and title page of Volume 1, strip of brown offset from dentelles to all first and last free endpapers, occasional pale spot, otherwise a very good clean tight set. Paget was a pupil of Douglas Cockerell, and exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Society in 1899. London, Ewer & Co. [185???] Overstamped in red: Jordens & Martens. New-York 785 Broadway. Hard Cover. 1 p.l., 108 pages; 26.5 cm. Composed in 1843-1845 on commission from the King of Prussia and first performed in December of 1845, Athalie was the last production of Mendelssohn's Berlin period. The first edition was Leipzig, 1849. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) Biblical tragedy was first performed in 1691. This version, with English libretto by William Bartholomew (1793-1867), seems to be the first English edition, and, with its publisher's overstamp, the first American as well. It appears to be earlier than the editions in the NUC (cf. 375: 552-553) or in the Boston or New York Public Libraries catalogs. It certainly dates before 1867 when Ewer merged with Novello. Vg/ bound in 3/4 leather with name label on front cover of Charles F. Leonard (a bass if the pencil markings are his). Stock#OB201.
