About This Item

Alfred A. Knopf, 1967. Hardcover. Good/Good . Signed by Author. Signature (only); scarce thus. Illustrated by the author. The political and economic life of the Eskimo is changing as more and more young Eskimos receive higher education and skilled training. Eskimos are encouraged to enter all phases of life and employment away from the villages to achieve better living standards. It is inevitable that many will not return. I began my trip north as an artist, but I began to write in the hope that my experiences may be of some value to the future generations of Eskimo children so that they will not forget their rich, proud heritage -- from author's acknowledgments. Claire Specht Fejes (1920 – 1998) was an American artist. Fejes sketched and painted Alaska Native people, Inupiat and Athabascans. Her work is held in several museums, including the Anchorage Museum, Frye Art Museum, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Anchorage Museum, the University of Alaska Museum of the North, and the National Portrait Gallery.
