Publisher's original dusky rose coloured boards with gilt titles to the spine, 191pp, together with original dust jacket priced at 9s 6d. Noting a light dust mark near the top of the upper joint, the boards are in fine condition with no shelf-wear. The spine titles are beautifully bright and fresh. All fore edge corners are firm, sharp and square. The binding is very tight and square, such that the book appears unread. There is a little tab of paper, 2 x 5mm, at the bottom fore edge of p125/126 that extends out from the text block, where it has not been cut properly in production. Internally, there is age related acid migration toning to the endpapers and a light vertical band of it on the pastedowns. One of the great first novels by an author who researched the life of people in the eras before recorded history as well as the life of the Eskimos. She lived in an ice cave and experienced the kind of food that would have been available. The lovely woman who came upon the people did not see her as beautiful by our standards but as ugly and unappealing. One of the great novels that did not pander to the conventional views of ancient peoples that emphasized violence as opposed to those who knew the need for cooperative societies. A lovely near fine copy bound in 1/4 yellow cloth over green paper covered boards, spine lettering green, in a near fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket with a very minute tear to foot.

Boards and spine in very good condition with no obvious defects. A couple of the pages have very small creases to the corners, and the top edge of the book has an orange mark across the top of the pages (only visible when the book is closed). Pages are otherwise very clean and bright, excellent condition for age. Jacket bright and colourful, with very slight fading to spine (author's name is faint) with some very minor scuffing and raising to edges and a small closed tear to the front. Not price clipped. Generally a good, collectable example.
