About This Item
Paris; nd[1908]: Calmann-Levy. Octavo. iii, 131 pages, illustrated by Ary Renan. French text. . The importance of this work is that it represents Renan's new-found criticism. It represents the conflict between Patrice and the young woman he loves and Cecile who continues to profess the uncritical faith that begins to resurge within the breast of the skeptic who has denied its truth. He sees the naivete of those who wish to do away with evil. Bound by W.H. Smith & Sons London with their binder's ticket in full green morocco , boards ruled in gilt, brown morocco spine label gilt, marbled endpapers. some rubbing and darkening to spine, very tiny previous owner's gift inscription and another owner's bookplate of Alfred Fowler. A very good copy.
