About This Item

Milsons Point [Sydney], Random House, 1996 [1st edition]; Soft cover, 155 x 235 mm, vii, 402 pp. Condition: VG+ - very small bump to one corner of the back cover, light edge wear and very light age-toned page edges - a very nice copy. Includes plates and index. Helen Broinowski Caldicott was born in Melbourne and trained as a doctor in Adelaide, where she devoted herself to the care of children with cystic fibrosis. Married with three children, she became concerned about the threat of radioactive fallout from French nuclear testing at Mururoa. Educating herself about the realities of nuclear war, her concern turned to horror and she embarked upon a mission that would totally consume her life. A FRANK AND ENGAGING MEMOIR FROM Determined to raise universal awareness, Helen Caldicott worked tirelessly both in Australia and overseas. Moving to the United States to work at Harvard Medical School, she helped found Physicians for Social Responsibility and Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament, two organisations at the forefront of the nuclear freeze movement. She took her message to world leaders, to the media and to audiences of thousands whom she roused to action with her extraordinary eloquence and passion. A PASSIONATE INSPIRING AUSTRALIAN An extraordinary life, it has not been without its pain. Success as an activist didn't come without cost and Dr. Caldicott reflects honestly on the impact her work has had on her family, her medical career, her marriage and her own wellbeing. A Passionate Life is a candid and revealing self-portrait of a charismatic and uncompromising Australian whose remarkable commitment to saving the world from itself continues to this day. She breathed on the coals of my soul and blew me bright awake to the nuclear threat. SISTER HELEN PREJEAN (author of Dead Man Walking)
