This is an extremely well-preserved vintage book that's more than 100 years old. It was published in 1909 (MCMIX). The previous owner's name is stamped inside but there is also an interesting very small label that reads: "A & R Milne, Stationers, Aberdeen." Here is the 'Excerpt from the Edinburgh Gazette, February 1, 1907. Notice of Dissolution. The Copartnership of A. AND R. MILNE, Booksellers JL and Stationers, 229, Union-street, Aberdeen, of which the subscribers, Alexander Milne and Alexander Lovie Murray, were the sole partners, was dissolved of this date by the retirement of Mr. Milne. The business will be continued under the old firm name by Mr. Murray, who will receive and pay all accounts. Dated this 31st day of January 1907. ALEXR. MILNE. Witnesses to the signature of Mr. Milne:— Ernest Rennet, 123 ½ , Union - street, Aberdeen, Advocate in Aberdeen, Witness. Leith Sangster, 123 1/2 , Union-street, Aberdeen, Clerk, Witness. A. L. MURRAY. Witnesses to the signature of Mr. Murray:— A. S. R. Bruce, Solicitor, 12, Dee-street, Aberdeen. Robert Leslie, Law-Clerk, 12, Dee-street, 061 Aberdeen.' Rev Dr. Marcus Dods DD (11 April 1834 – 26 April 1909). He was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland and served as Principal of New College, Edinburgh. In 1864 he became minister of Renfield Free Church, Glasgow, where he worked for twenty-five years. In 1889 he was appointed professor of New Testament Exegesis in the New College, Edinburgh, of which he became principal. He was both a biblical scholar and a prolific author. The spine contains an additional text: "Household Library of Exposition" reflecting Dr. Dod's biblical scholarship.
Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord; 'This parable had to be spoken. It gave expression to thoughts which burdened the mind of Jesus throughout His ministry. On the day He uttered it, he had left the house and was sitting by the sea-side, and there were gathered unto Him great multitudes. He had no difficulty in finding an audience. It is one of the greatest pleasures to listen to a good speaker. It is a pleasure which attracts young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. A good speaker is always sure of an audience, and especially where he has not to encounter the rivalry of books. But as Jesus watched the crowd assembling, and perceived the various dispositions with which the people came, He could not but reflect how much of what He had to say must certainly be lost on many…..'
Good++!Very well-preserved. All pages are intact; several pages have marks/underlining (only-The Parable of The Prodigal Son & The Rich Fool). NO highlighting. NOT ex-Library. There is a name stamped but NO nameplate. Undamaged spine with a tight binding but a minor loosening of the hinge, Very Good++ excellent, beautiful navy blue covers with gilt lettering on spine, NO rips, tears, or corner bumps-minor shelf wear. This book is amazing. Jesus offered many parables but the way st luke wrote theses parables enables the reader to form an existential description of what the writer is making known to the audience. I give this book 5 stars!
