About This Item

N. P.: Painted by E. M. Jackson, 1936., 1936. First edition. 22" x 34 1/2" framed oil painting by E. M. Jackson (1896-1962) of Philo Vance, which appears between pages 498 and 499 in the book PHILO VANCE MURDER CASES by S. S. Van Dine and includes "The Dragon Murder Case," "The Scarab Murder Case," and "The Kennel Murder Case." The book was published in 1936 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Elbert McGran (E.M.) Jackson was known for his illustrations of glamourous, seductive women, Elbert Jackson worked for the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's and other national magazines. He also illustrated murder mystery books. Elbert was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, graduating from Georgia School of Technology in 1916 with honors in architecture. He found work as an architect in New York but his deep love of pictures and color sent him at night to the Beaux Arts Institute on Seventy-sixth Street, where he studied painting, drawing, anatomy, and sculpture at night. And soon he switched professions and began to draw pictures. Mentored by illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, Elbert's first magazine cover appeared on the Saturday Evening Post in January 1921. By the end of the 1920s, he had painted thirty-nine Saturday Evening Post covers. He went on to do a total of fifty-eight covers for the Curtis Publishing Company, forty-eight for the Saturday Evening Post and ten for Country Gentleman. His cover illustrations also appeared on the Ladies Home Journal, Colliers, McCalls, and many other magazines. He also provided illustrations for stories in books and magazines by such authors as Fannie Hurst, Kathleen Norris, Louis Bromfield, Rex Beach, Faith Baldwin, Pearl Buck, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Edna Ferber, Harold Bell Wright, and Robert W. Chambers. As technology changed, hand painted illustration art all but disappeared, replaced in large part by photography. This change pushed Mr. Jackson in new directions. In his later years, he designed and produced custom fabrics for New York interior decorators and designed memorials with several of his tombstones in Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta. Elbert Jackson died in 1963 at the age of 66. Jackson's work is of splendid quality and the painting itself is an excellent rendering of Philo Vance as he has been conceived by the famous artist. Fine.
