Preface to the tenth edition (1969), preface to the first edition (1938), acknowledgements, list of plates, a reader's synopsis, tables of notation and nomenclature and postscript concerning the pronouncing glossary. The text is illustrated with musical notation, reproductions of artwork, facsimiles of documents, and reproductions of pictures. All done in black and white. Blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper With gold and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. This, the 10th edition, is the first to be completely reset since the death of the author in 1958. One of the classics of music references. A little softening of the back strip edges and bumping to the top book edge and corners. There is a little stain to the top right hand corner of the rear panel – commensurate with stain to the dustwrapper. Some staining to the top text edge. Minor creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the panels. A stain can be seen to the top edge of the rear panel and to the rear fold over panel which can also be seen, obviously, to the verso. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. LX, 1196 pages,.
