Original studio lobby card for PENROD AND SAM by [ Tarkington, Booth] - 1923

[Culver City]: The Selznick Studio, 22 October 1956.. [3],191 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in canary yellow production company wrappers. Some minor spots of red offsetting to lower edge of upper wrapper, otherwise very near fine. An unspecified but substantially preproduction draft of Hecht's adaptation of Hemingway's novel of the Great War. It was the novel's second screen adaptation to reach production. This draft precedes John Huston's coming on board as director (and of course his departure, at which point Charles Vidor took over). This draft is nearly 20 leaves longer than several subsequent drafts. Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones starred.

Advance reading copy, bound up from printed sheets, of the first edition of the author's third novel, source for the multiple award- winning and nominated 1971 film adaptation, based on McMurtry's collaborative screenplay with director Bogdanovich. Preceded by a minute handful of sets of actual uncorrected page proofs, a wholly different animal than this state, although this format is sometimes confused with the other.

A genuine and VERY RARE single volume first edition of the second book in Forester's famed Hornblower series published in April 1938, well before the bundled volume: Ship of the Line/Flying Colours.The front title page of the dust jacket has been cut and glued onto the inside (page 2) of the hardcover. Binding is tight, slightly slanted, with cream-coloured inside binding pages. Very clean, slightly tanned pages with light foxing to textblock exteriors. Two light pencil-marked annotations on pages 75 and 239. Unattached giftcard inserted dated Dec. 1938.

A wonderful copy of the author's fifth novel, filmed in 1974 with Roger Moore, Susannah York and Bradford Dillman in the leading roles. It sounds like a lifetime ago and yet this copy presents almost As New. Square, tight, with a fresh, white text-block, the most minor of pushing at the extreme spine tips but corners sharp- a really handsome copy. In a beautiful unclipped dustjacket with absolutely no loss of paper but a microscopic chip to the laminate at the crown. There is a line or score across the front panel which may be a production fault - not unduly noticeable although obviously a slight blemish to an otherwise perfect copy. Loosely inserted an adhesive label which has been signed by Wilbur Smith - not a contemporary signature.

It's returning to Broadway this April, 2022, starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell, and Darren Criss. David Mamet wrote a new foreword for this edition, which divulges his inspiration for the play as a long-running poker game in a junk shop in Chicago. Michael McCurdy was the founder of Penmaen Press (1968-1985) as well as a prolific book illustrator, known for his skill as a wood engraver (Arion Press). 11 x 8¼". 117 pp. Limited Edition of 400 copies, this being No. 16. Illustrated with five wood engravings by Michael McCurdy. Original teal textured cloth, paper title labels, real buffalo nickel inset on front cover encircled by silver title. Designed, printed, and bound under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. Fine, SIGNED BY DAVID MAMET AND MICHAEL McCURDY.

SIGNED full page inscription on front end page by film maker Hall Bartlett and dated February 25th 1972. Inscription states "Dear Diane and Mike. This is my next film, the one with Tony Quinn", that it took three years of fighting to get the movie rights and asking Diane and Mike for collaboration on the film. The film was released in 1978 staring Anthony Quinn and titled the same as the book. The movie was nominated for both a Golden Globe and at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1979 [IMDB and Golden Globes]. Robin Hood has become one of the world's most well-known legendary heroes from English folklore. Robin and his Merry Men were known to common thieves who sought to better the poor and take care of the sick. The name Robin Hood has become synonymous with outlaws who do not reveal their identity.
