Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs. & Co., 1895. 12mo. xxxvi, 392 pp., plus 4 pp. publ. ads. 150 text illusts. Illust. gray cloth, silver, red & blk lettrng on frnt cvr & spine (soot soilng on cvrs, edgewear, some rubbng, slght bmpng to crnrs), still a G- copy, inscribed by the author on 2nd flyleaf to Miss Anna Springer, 1895. First edition, inscribed, of this fascinating collection of fairy tales, based on the author’s naturalist studies of the behaviors of ants and spiders. McCook (1837-1911), is perhaps best remembered for his expansive work American spiders and their spinning work, 1889-1893, and he had most of the illustrations executed by Daniel Carter Beard, founder of the Boy Scouts of America.
