About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1989. First edition. 8vo, 137pp. Signed and inscribed by Lowry to Charlotte Huck on the title page. Blind stamped black cloth, spine lettered in gilt in illustrated jacket. Some toning to page block, few bent page corners, and Huck's notes and underlines in pencil throughout, including her analysis on the last blank page. Jacket shows edge wear and a few small tears along top edge and rubbing along folds. Very good.

Signed, first printing of this Newbery-winning title from Lois Lowry telling the tale of Annemarie Johansen's escape from Nazi occupied Copenhagen in 1943.  This copy from the library of children's literature expert and Ohio State University professor, Charlotte Huck (1922-2005).  Huck served on both the Caldecott and Newbery Honor committees and authored the standard textbook, Children's Literature in the Elementary School.  In 2014, the National Council of Teachers of English established an award in her honor, each year recognizing a transformative, compassionate work of children's fiction.

Synopsis

Number the Stars is a work of historical fiction about the Holocaust during World War II  by Newbery Award-winning author Lois Lowry. Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen is the central character, who lived in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1943 and was caught up in the events surrounding the rescue of the Danish Jews.

Reviews

On Oct 7 2014, a reader said:
There are a lot of good Holocaust books, and this is one of them, but there was nothing that made it stand out from the rest in my mind.
