First published 1955; this is the 1962 TIME Reading Program Special Edition. Architectual biography of Notre Dame, Gothic cathedral of the Middle Ages, distinguished for its size, antiquity & architectural interest. Notre-Dame was built on the ruins of two earlier churches, which were predated by a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. The cathedral was initiated by Bishop Maurice de Sully of Paris, who conceived it's conversion into a single building on ruins of the two earlier basilicas. Its foundation stone was laid 1163 by Pope Alexander III. This landmark book is from architectural critic & writer Allan Bernard Temko (1924 - 2006). 343 pgs, 32 archival plates, 17 chapters in 5 parts: Part I, Origins; II, "The Renewal of All Things"; III, Notre-Dame; IV, Notre-Dame, The Classic Phase; V, The Completion of Notre-Dame, followed by The Passion of Notre-Dame and Appendix.
