About This Item

London.: Office of the Arundel Society., 1856.. Original leather-backed printed boards; slightly warped and stained; rebacked in modern cloth.. 4to.. With 9 tipped-in original albumen photographic plates by J. A. Spencer. The ivories represent European work of the 6th-14th centuries, illustrated in a series of nicely-reproduced albumen prints of varied size. When the Society began selling casts of the originals they gave a booklet describing them to each purchaser. The author comments that it took some time to make the required number of photographic prints needed for the undertaking. [Gernsheim - Incunabula of British Photographic Literature, no.51].
