About This Item

New York: Polish Information Center, 1941. Newsletter. Twenty-eight issues of the 8.5x11 inch newsletter, average length around 5 pages; a few issues have creases or uneven toning, but generally very good condition. Numbers present are 66, 68, 69, 71, 72, 74-81, 83-90, 92-98. The Polish Information Center was founded in 1940 by staff who had represented Poland at the World's Fair in New York in 1939; it maintained connections with the Polish government in exile. These newsletters contain reports from war-torn Poland, describing both German and Soviet forces as destructive occupiers. Early issues reflect Soviet mistrust of even Stalinists in Poland, citing executions of Polish Communists by the Red Army because of suspicion that they were spies. After the Nazis violated the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Soviet relations were described as improving, with the USSR coming to perceive Poles as allies against Germany. The last issue here, August 7, describes a new Soviet-Polish treaty. Some issues mention the plight of Jews, with the possibility cited at this time that the Nazis would deport them to Madagascar.
