About This Item

Toronto & Montreal: McClelland & Stewart, 1963. Book. Good to Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. In 1948-49 Mowat spent some time in the Canadian subarctic, on the Dominion Wildlife Service's dime, observing wolves in an effort to determine if they were responsible for declining caribou populations (spoiler alert: Mowat claims that they weren't). His writing about this project has been both scorned and lauded. This copy comes with both dust jackets, the first state an amusing illustration featuring a wolf with its left leg around Mowat's shoulder in a friendly embrace, the second state featuring a somewhat blandly generic photograph of Mowat. Apparently someone at M&S didn't think much of the first jacket (which is immeasurably better than the second), and ordered it redone. Grey cloth w/red spine lettering/wolf's head illustration, 247 pages. Mild cover warp, slightly cocked, gift inscription to previous owner. Outer (2nd state) dust jacket w/rubbing, edge/corner/spine end chipping, sunned (legible) spine, tape repair to reverse by previous owner to reattach rear flap to rear panel, foxing to reverse. Inner (1st state) dust jacket w/minor chipping to corners/spine ends, previous owner's tape repair to reverse of spine, some foxing to reverse..

Gripping narrative of a professional biologist sent to the arctic by Canada's wildlife Service to study wolves

which I later heard was made into a movie. The twist at the end is unforgettable.
