About This Item

Tuskegee, Alabama: Monroe Work, 1919. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 523pp. Original printed wrappers with the text block stapled as issued. Ownership signature of Yale scholar John W. Blassingame on the front wrapper, very light chipping and wear, an evenly toned very good copy. An uncommon, extensive compendium of African-American history and recent developments in African-American society, published by the Tuskegee Institute in 1919. It contains lengthy sections on "The Negro in 1917-1918," shifting demographics, black businesses and institutions, and notable black figures, among others. This copy belonged to John W. Blassingame, noted African-American author and scholar who chaired the African-American Studies program at Yale until his death in 2000, with his ownership inscription on the front wrapper. *OCLC* locates nine copies over two records.
