About This Item

Philadelphia: American Baptist Publication Society, 1898. Hardcover. Very Good. 203p. Original red cloth. 19 cm, Modest cover scuffing and soiling. Cover lettered dulled. The white author, who had served as an officer in segregated regiments of African Americans in the Union Army during the Civil War and whose grandfather had been a slave owner, says in the Prefatory Note that he has served for 5 years as the executive officer of the American Baptist Home Missionary Society which was involved in extensive work for African Americans. He was relatively progressive for the times and favored expanded efforts to provide educational opportunites for African Americans, including at least some higher education for both sexes -- see chapters III and IV at pages 75-114.
