About This Item

London; 1896-[1897]: John C. Nimmo. First Edition. Hard Cover. Folio. no pagination. A series of 36 chromolithographs depicting the swords, axes, masks, crowns, flags, and several other relics used by famous men of the British wars such as Oliver Cromwell, Lord Nelson, Napoleon and, as Holmes states in his introduction "the sword of his stupid brother Joseph," along with the famous bible owned by General Gordon; all beautifully illustrated by William Gibb from the original water color drawings, each with tissue guard present. The preface is dated January1897, as the first issue of this work was limited to 50 copies in nine parts, which probably did not have the long awaited preface for the trade edition. A lovely copy, bound in blue pictorial gilt cloth over beveled boards, spine lettering and all edges gilt. A large heavy book with minor shelf wear to bottom edges. Very nice.
