About This Item
Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, 1982. Cloth in dust jacket. Light shelfwear. Very Good. 245 pp. Illustrated from b/w photos. Biblio., index. A first hand account of life among the Navajo people in the 20th century. Don and Terry Allen, when they 'talked together in laughter' with their Navaho friends, not only overcame the barrier of language, but also found their way to an understanding in depth of a remarkable people's problems and their great humanity. The Allens got a remarkable opportunity in 1955 when they were invited to serve simply as caretakers for a temporarily vacated outstation of the well-known Ganado Mission. This was the beginning . . . The book is beautifully written, a perceptive picture of real people set in a dramatic landscape.
