London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longman,, 1832. Book. Illus. by Earle, Augustus. Good. Half-Leather. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. x, 371 pages, frontispiece, 6 other plates (all present). Book is rebound in half leather cloth boards and marbled endpapers. This binding could be from the 19th century or early 20th century, old name "B. Gudgeon" on preliminary leaf. One of the plates has the bottom corner missing, ca. 1cm). Plates a little foxed. Augustus Earle (1793 - 1838) was a London-born travel artist. In 1824 he was forced to stay on the island of Tristan d'Acunha when the ship he was traveling on suddenly left while he was ashore. In 1827 - 1828 he spent several months in New Zealand where he met the Nga Puhi chief Hongi Hika. He also recorded travels through the northern parts of the North Island, meetings with Maori and missionaries. The plates show Maori dancing the war dance, the Haka, the New Zealand method of tattooing and other scenes and people..
