About This Item
Bombay: Society for the Cause of Mother's Lineage, Theosophical Colony, 1961. v, 50 p., staplebound pamphlet, some rust migration at the staples; "From the library of Margaret Mead" penciled on first interior page (the handwriting does not appear to be that of the noted anthropologist by this name). The author petitioned India's courts in 1959 arguing that he should have the right to identify with his mother's lineage rather than that of his father. Among other benefits in the context of promoting women's equality, he argued that this would lift the stigma of illegitimacy, as all children would belong to the lineage of their birth mothers. The petition was dismissed, but Chand went on to publish a number of pamphlets about the issue; in each of them he identifies himself as "Son of Smt. Pista Deva" (Smt. Standing for Shrimati, an honorific for married women). This publication includes his appeal to India's Supreme Court.
