About This Item
New York: Atheneum, 1961. First Edition. First Edition, published simultaneously in Canada by Longmans, Green and Company. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper to noted bibliophile and scholar, Toby Holtzman: "For Toby / With many thanks / Joan Williams / Oxford, Miss / Aug. 2, 1990." Laid in is an autographed letter (folded twice, with an envelope addressed to Toby Holtzman) signed by Williams, written on parchment from Marriott Hotels, thanking the recipient for a review he commissioned of her book. Also included is a typed letter (folded twice, with an envelope addressed to the recipient) signed by Williams, written on plain parchment, requesting Mr. Holtzman review her book and suggesting "the Detroit paper" as means for the review's publication.
Very Good plus in a Near Fine dust jacket. Faint dampstaining at the extremities (slightly obscuring spine title) and top and bottom page edges, else Near Fine. Jacket is quite fresh and clean, with just a few faint creases at the edges, and light rubbing at the spine ends. Author's first novel, an overlooked title in writing of the South, with interesting ephemera to match.
