About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape. 1955. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publiser's original black cloth with silver titles to upper board and spine, in the Kenneth Lewis illustrated dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with a small previous owner's stamp in blue to the front pastedown (hidden by the dustwrapper flap) are otherwise clean throughout. The closed text block edge just a little toned. Complete with the very good or better, lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which has the habitual fading of the spine but in this case with the flames still definable. The rear panel is somewhat toned and spotted. Price-clipped to the lower front flap but not to the rear (10s 6d net). An attractive example in entirely original condition. Housed in a bespoke quarter black leather solander case. The third novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. This example of the book in the second of Gilbert's two variant states, with "shoot" spelled correctly on page ten. Published on 7th April 1955 in an edition of 9,600 copies (including both variants). [Gilbert A3a (1.2)]. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Synopsis

Ian Fleming (1908-1964), creator of the world's best-known secret agent, is the author of fourteen James Bond books. Born in London in 1908 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he became the Reuters Moscow correspondent in 1929. In the spring of 1939, Fleming went back to Moscow as a special correspondent for the London Times . In June of that same year, he joined Naval Intelligence and served throughout World War II, finally earning the rank of Commander, RNVSR (Sp.). Much of the James Bond material was drawn directly from Fleming's experiences as an intelligence officer. Later, Fleming became a consultant on foreign affairs for the London Sunday Times , by which time he had become far better known as the creator of James Bond.
