(N.p.: Michael Mar Press, 1977. Small quarto. (16)ff. One of twelve copies, hand-produced by jewelry designer Michael Dorsa and bookbinder Margaret Rhein. With twelve color illustrations. The text and images were both from an original work written and drawn in 1964 by Mike Dorsa and Tom Warner, age nine. In the story, the turtles Betty and Brickred defeat the deadly monster on Turtle Mountain, which is "said to be 6 feet tall and to shoot poisonrings that make you die for 66 years." After tossing the body in the lake, the turtles and their offspring celebrate accordingly with a picnic and fireworks. Corrections to the text have been marked in red pen, adding punctuation and fixing spelling, and providing an editorial eye to a work of youthful legendary genius.

This copy is inscribed in pencil to papermaker Douglas Howell: "The inspiration required to get this project together came from my meeting with you, Douglas Howell. Thank you, Michael Dorsa." Howell was instrumental in the revival of hand papermaking. His paper, which came in a wide variety of styles, weights, colors, and materials, was used by artists and printmakers and displayed in galleries throughout the world. Howell also taught workshops in his studio, and many of his students went on to establish papermaking departments in art schools and universities in the United States and Canada. Very fine, in full brown leather with an illustration of the monster blind-tooled to the upper cover.

The subject of this title is the most deadly earthquake in Peru's history prior to 1970, the so-called Great Earthquake of 1746 which caused massive destruction, killing thousands of people. Callao, a sea-port town, two leagues south from Lima was, of course, also hit. Just as the people of Callao were starting to come to their senses, a giant Tsunami hit the port. Callao was swallowed up by the sea and basically vanished. A British sailing vessel in the port was washed two miles inland. The folding map shows the country around Lima, with Callao just to the south, a plan of the road from Lima to Callao, a plan of the… Read More

Albany, 1801. Folio printed Broadside, 9" x 16." Mildly toned, lightly worn, old mailing folds, two tabs on blank verso from prior mounting. Addressed in ink on blank verso: "Mr. Benjamin Warren | Augusta." Very Good. The broadside is signed in type by nearly forty worthy Federalists who urge the election of Lieutenant-Governor Stephen Van Rensselaer to replace John Jay, who had become New York's second Governor after resigning as the first Chief Justice of the United States. Van R is praised for his private and public character, his integrity and patriotism. "At a time when personal animosity and party spirit prevail, we have a peculiar pride and satisfaction in recommending to your support a man distinguished for his disinterestedness and moderation." Our research does not disclose any other copies of this unusual imprint. Not in American Imprints, Sabin, Eberstadt, or on OCLC or the online sites of AAS, NYPL, NYHS, Harvard, Yale as of May 2023.

New York: Published by H. & W. Voight. Lith. by Kimmel & Forster, 254 & 256 Canal St., 1865. Broadside illustration, 8-3/4" x 10"; mounted on 9-3/4" x 12" stiff backing. Short closed tear at top blank margin, lower blank forecorner chipped [corrected with the backing]. Good+. "From building inscribed, 'To let Apply Lincoln & Co.', Southerners, at whom Negro thumbs his nose, are moving 'C.S.A. Treasury,' etc." [Weitenkampf]. Anticipating the end of the Civil War in Richmond, the cartoon depicts Robert E. Lee collecting swords for placement in a cart drawn by two skeletal dogs, Treasury Secretary Trenholm hauling away worthless Confederate bonds, and a "Sheriff Sale" sign on the building. Bystanders look on. A dog urinates on a box entitled "C.S.A. Treasury. Waster Paper." Despite the title's date, the cartoon issued before May 1, that date being the artist's prediction of the time of the Confederacy's collapse. The reference to Lincoln & Co. suggests the President was still alive. Weitenkampf 148… Read More
