Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, Publisher, 1846. Full Leather. Good/No Jacket. Full calf leather. 176, 158 pp. The section of writings by Talfourd indicates this was the second American edition, containing additional articles never before published in the United States. The essays by Talfourd relate primary to literary matters, authors, etc., with the essays by Stephen relating to various historical subjects. Thomas Talfourd was an English politician and author, writing for various literary magazines on the subjects of literature and law. James Stephen was a British under-secretary of state for the colonies in the 1830s and 40s, and was a key figure in the implementation of the slavery abolition act (Wikipedia). GOOD condition. Ex-library. Bookplate and circular embossment present (on the title page) with an alphanumeric figure also present. No exterior treatments present. Dark stain present along the lower edges of the covers. Some spotting and minor staining to the covers, with light soiling. Heavy scuffing to the leather at the corners, extremities and along the spine. Minor to moderate scattered foxing throughout the interior. Very minor scattered soiling.
