Tukesbury speaks against tobacco use, including mentioning its detrimental effects on physical health, as well as addresses the ills of intemperance. He also discusses music and dancing, war and the promotion of nonviolence/pacifism, voting for for, the future state, etc. VERY GOOD condition. Minor fading, scuffing and edgewear. Minor toning to the paper in the interior.

A collection of essays written between 1918 and 1926 reflecting on art, literature and culture. By Jean Cocteau, and artist and writer associated with surrealism and avant garde movements. This includes the "Cock and the Harlequin," "Professional Secrets," and others. GOOD condition. General fading and minor offsetting to the covers. Light edgewear. Text block toned.

A collection of essays discussing travel, artists, England, sightseeing, etc. With two photographs of statues. Thomas Appleton was an author and sometime artist, although more of a patron to the arts. He was good friends with Henry Longfellow. VERY GOOD condition. Minor fading and scuffing to the covers. Corners and spine tips worn. Light toning to the text block.

Ingersoll, Thomas Paine, John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards, as well as an essay asking "What is Prayer?" Ricker reflects on Robert G. Ingersoll, his agnosticism and skill as an orator, as well as his advocacy for freethought, and questions Theodore Roosevelt's criticisms of Thomas Paine, among other subjects. Marilla M. Ricker was the first woman admitted to the NH bar as well as being admitted to the bar in Washington DC in 1882. She pushed for prison reform, and worked free of charge for many of her clients. Ricker was also a strong advocate for women's suffrage, being the first woman to attempt to vote in New Hampshire, arguing that she had a right to do so as a property owner in Dover, NH. Printed wraps. 48 pp. Fifth issue of this little magazine that embraces a philosophical and aesthetic style similar to the Philistine published by Elbert Hubbard. Graves focuses on efficiency as a means to improving one's life, giving aphorisms throughout, tending toward New Thought style philosophy. This issue discusses safe check writing, the divine passion, fashion, health, a book by Upton Sinclair, etc. GOOD condition. Some wrinkling, soiling, creasing and edgewear. Small area of the cover surface peeled off at the lower rear corner.

(20), 576, (18) pp. A collection of essays, presumably written for women, discussing topics such as education, dress, recreations, chastity, etc. There is some debate as to whether the work was written by Lady Mary Wray Harrison or Richard Steele, with modern scholarship leaning toward the latter, along with other (George Berkeley) authors. Richard Steele was an author, playwright and politician, and is perhaps best known for his journal, The Spectator. GOOD condition. Some scuffing, minor soiling and a few small stains to the covers. Leather very worn along the spine, with splits, cracking, flaking and loss, including a small chip. Hinges cracked and beginning to separate. Several ownership signatures and a stamp present on the first endpaper, inside front cover. Text block solid. Minor scattered foxing and soiling. ESTC T80462.

Xi, 214 pp. An English language edition, published in Ireland, of this work by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the noted 18th century French philosopher and writer, apparently translated into English from an untitled manuscript by Rousseau. GOOD condition. Leather cracked and split along the entire length of the front hinge and most of the rear hinge. Large area of discoloration/staining to the lower rear cover. Moderate to heavy scuffing, mostly to the extremities and spine. Mostly minor scattered foxing and spotting in the interior.

Collated and complete. A funeral sermon accompanied by an unattributed poem titled An Elegy Upon the Death of Mr. Thomas Wadsworth. Remains of leather binding along its left edge. Sewn binding. In GOOD condition. Moderate darkening, with heavier darkening along the extremities. Some soiling and minor wear along the extremities. Faint dampstain present in the upper margin of the pages. Thomas Talfourd was an English politician and author, writing for various literary magazines on the subjects of literature and law.
