About This Item

New York: Phillips & Hunt, 1879. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcovers, complete two-volume set along with a little piece of ephemera. Both volumes contain spotting and scuffing along with edge and corner bumps/wear. Both spines have chipping along the top, with volume 1 being the worst. The cloth in volume 2 is a lighter shade and has more spots. The front end pages of both volumes contain a circular embossed stamp appears to read " Perkinpine & Higgins, Theological Miscellaneous & Sunday School Publishers & Booksellers" of Philadelphia. Both of these front end pages also contain the original owners signature written in pencil. The piece of ephemera is a card from that same Methodist Book Store in Philadelphia - one side is blue with the address and the of the site is red advertising a dictionary. The interior condition of volume 1 is as follows: the front end page has a very small tear along the top edge near the seal. This foxing on the frontispiece and tissue guard with light spotting on the title page. The text pages are toned with only minor scattered foxing. The first rear end page has some penciled notes with 16 lines of writing referencing certain things in the book. There is also some light pencil marks on whatever page was listed in the owner's notes. Volume 1 contains 462 pages. Volume 2 has the same circular embossing and signature on the front end page along with a faint price penciled in the corner. The binding and this volume is tighter and first rear end page is filled from top to bottom with penciled notes, same as volume 1. With these 16 references they also have small pencil marks for whatever sentence the person was annotating. All the marks on the text pages appear to be easily erasable though the single page in each book of penciled notes might be more of an issue. Volume 2 contains 471 pages (the total of both volumes is 973 pages). Interior binding of both volumes is good with no hinge issues, it even at the boards. Volume 1 does have a page does stick out a tad. It is the illustration at page 347 which appears to be well secure. This slight issue can be seen in the last photos showing the exterior page edge on the long side. The foldout maps in both volumes are present and in good shape. The sale is for both volumes and the piece of advertising ephemera.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
