As indicated by the present title, he was also active as an essayist. Eleven of the nineteen items in this collection deal with legal topics. The others are fictional pieces, travel sketches, biographies and reviews of recent fiction. Several are outstanding, such as "My First Circuit: Law and Facts From the North," "Who is the Murderer? A Problem in the Law of Circumstantial Evidence," "Personal Recollection of Christopher North," "Modern State Trials" and his fascinating review of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
