Boards are cracked and exposed along front and rear hinges, though binding is holding. Chipped at spine ends. Corners bumped with exposure. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper, some toning to preliminaries. Two inch tear to page ix running vertically from top edge near gutter. Pages unmarked.
A wide-ranging dive into the history of alcohol and temperance movements. Includes sections on non-alcohol stimulants (arrack, pulque, and coca), causes of intemperance (effort to drown present sorrow), and "The Life and Death of King Alcohol," a 15 page poem which includes the stirring passage:
In conclave met, in Hell's dark Hall,
I, Satan, give King Alcohol,
Full power the human race to kill,
And with their souls these caverns fill.
No copies in retail at time of this writing.
