About This Item

UNRECORDED MEXICAN BOARD GAME

"Explicación. Si al comenzar a jugar, los dados dieren…" México: Lito. De Murguia. [Circa. 1890]. Propiedad del Editor. 33 cm x 57 cm. Some small tears in the borders, and splits at folds. Each of the 63 slots is illustrated. Illustrator unknown.

OCLC shows no holdings. No known references. Title is from the first line of the instructions. "The race game whose prototype can be traced to ancient Egypt, is commonplace in all western and oriental cultures. The juego de la oca or game of goose, is a type of race game that originated in Florence during the late Sixteenth Century and was introduced in Spain under Phillip II. It may have been brought to Mexico—like card games (amapatolli) and chess (quaah patolli)—by the Spanish conquerors." – Ron Tyler. This version, like Posada's item above also maintains the traditional game retains the traditional spiral of 63 cells (casillas), along which a player's men move with a throw of the dice. The player tries to avoid the penalty cells. A great graphic item.
