About This Item

1878 ACCOUNT OF A WESTERN MILITARY WIFE

[Texas] [Women] [Mary A Marcy, Mrs.] Memorial of Mrs. Mary A. Marcy. For private distribution. Trenton, NJ: Naar Day & Naar, printers. 1878. Black boards with silver lettering. 25.4 cm. 17 pp. Cover chipping; interior very good.

OCLC shows five holdings (Columbia; Rochester Pub. Lib.; Autry Museum; Princeton & Wis. Hist. Soc.) Mary A. Mann wed Lieutenant Randolph B. Marcy in 1833. Randolph had a well-known career as an Army officer and Western explorer, fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. He determined the Marcy route from Fort Smith to Santa Fe. He also explored the Great Plains in search of the source of the Red River, resulting in the book Exploration of the Red River of Louisiana, In the Year 1852.... – Handbook of Texas. This book shares some of Mrs. Marcy's life as a military wife at Western forts. A rare privately published account of a western military wife.
