About This Item

Taylor & Dodd, New York, 1839; First Edition; tall octavo, 270 pages; embossed black cloth; gilt titles; frontispiece engraved portrait plate. The life and work of American divine Edward D. Griffin (1770-1837), celebrated for his intellect, oratorical power, and generosity, who served as President of Williams College 1821-1836. Written by fellow clergyman William B. Sprague, D.D. (1795-1876), author of the monumental nine volume series "Annals Of The American Pulpit," definitive compendium of some 1300 biographies of early American clergymen, and whose enormous collection of American religious imprints and other Americana is housed today at Princeton Theology Seminary. Very Good Plus. Engraved frontispiece portrait plate of Dr. Griffin, with guard tissue, binding tight, perfectly square, titles bright, light to moderate foxing, chiefly of the blank end papers, engraved bookplate of American historian and author Frank D. Andrews (1847-1937) on front paste down. A sound and handsome copy of an original volume, not a reprint. Scarce
