About This Item

Scarecrow Press, Metuchen, first edition, 1972. Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. vi, 507 pp. Over 4,000 entries. From the introduction: " "One result of the intense religious and political struggles produced by the four-and-a-half year civil war of the Fronde (January 1649-October 1652) was the appearance of large numbers of pamphlets. It is impossible to know exactly how many appeared; estimates range from 5,000 to 11,000. In all likelihood, only about a quarter of all pamphlets written were published; the rest remained in manuscript, but, nevertheless, had a wide circulation. Reflecting as they did the social and political aspects of the Fronde, these "Mazarinades, " as they were called, remain one of the most fruitful sources for a study of this exciting period. The Société de l'Histoire de France published in 1850-51 a three-volume bibliography of Mazarinades, edited by Celestin Moreau. This monumental work that explained the background and circumstances of the publication of the pamphlets was the first major attempt to compile a list of these publications, and has remained the point from which all subsequent listings of Mazarinades begin. Even though Mazarinades have generally been well cataloged, scholars in the United States working in this period have found it difficult to locate holdings of these materials. It is the intention of this work to provide a checklist that will facilitate the location of Moreau items. Top edge slightly duststained, otherwise Very Good.
