About This Item

Cambridge, Printed by J. Archdeacon...For J. & J. Merrill..., 1787. 8vo, 202 x 126 mms., pp. [ii], 97 [98 blank], 3 folding engraved plates at end, modern floral motif wrappers. A very good copy. The theologian and mathematician William Ludlam (1717 - 1788) achieved some distinction with his skills in mathematics, astronomy, and practical mechanics. The two essays on ultimate ratios and the power of the wedge were first published in 1770, and that on Newton's second law of motion in 1780. An essay on the properties of the cycloid and on one of the propositions in Newton's Principia are new to this edition. ESTC T125052 locates 14 copies in UK libraries; and American Philosophical Society, Harvard, Library Company of Philadelphia, Stanford, LC in the USA, as well as one at Monash. OCLC adds Cornell.
