London: Printed for J. Nourse..., 1770. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 205 x 130 mms., pp. [ii], v [sic, for iv], 7 - 168, 3 folding engraved plates, disbound. Emerson (1701 - 1782), a thoroughly practical man writes in the preface that mathematics is in daily use, but, "to oblige the lower sort of readers (for everyone is not destined to study the sublime parts of the Mathematicks) I have composed the following Treatise." One would guess that the "lower sort of readers" consisted of about 90 per cent of people in the 18th century who bought books. Part II is on "Geometrical Problems, and the Measuring of Lines" and describes a "Sliding rule" and its use.

Stone's work continued to be of interest to mathematicians throughout the 18th century and into the 19th; for literary scholars, its importance lies in its function as a source used by Dr. Johnson in compiling his Dictionary of the English Language (1755). Edinburgi: Apud W. Sands, A. Murray, & J. Cochran. Sumptibus W. Sands, & A. Kincaid. 1750. 4to, 250 x 187 mms., pp. viii, 224, 38 folding engraved plates, contemporary calf; joints cracked (but holding, top and base of spine chipped, corners worn, spine rubbed. A very modest copy. Simson (1687 - 1768) published this work in 1735, but he had begun his intellectual career as a classicist. He began his studies at Glasgow University in 1701, and ten years later, he was offered the chair of mathematics, at the age of 24, having just acquired his first degree in the subject. ODNB notes that he published the present work " partly intended as an introduction to the treatise by Apollonius of Perga on the subject; here Simson employed methods of pure geometry rather than algebra. In 1738 he completed the restoration of the 'Loci plani' of Apollonius, a task already attempted by Fermat before 1629 and by Francis Schooten in 1657; his conclusions were published in 1749 in a work… Read More

Description:
In Verona, Per Pierantonio Berno Stampatore, e Librario nella Via de' Leoni, 1727. 4to, 22 x 150 mms., pp. [x], 152, with woodcut vignette on title-page, and numerous engraved vignettes in text, original limp paper boards, with title in ink (but faded) on front cover, visible stitching; front hinge open with cords exposed, covers a bit soiled, small defects on spine, but a reasonable copy with a very clean text. This was one of the last publications of the gifted architect and mathematician, Lodovico Perini (1685 - 1731). He studied practical geometry and perspective with the Gasparo Bighignato guide and later Domenico Rossetti. Perini aimed to make the principles of geometry applicable to practical activities and undertakings in land management, surveying, architecture, etc. The woodcut engravings in the text provide very useful visual guides to measuring dimensions, calculating volume, and constructing tools and implements.

Description:
New York, Wiley & Putnam, Collins, Keese, & Co...., 1838. Davies' work was first published in 1832. He was Professor of Mathematics at West Point Military Academy. When the first edition was published, the reviewer in The New England Magazine for May 1832, observed, "No man should presume to criticise even a painting or engraving unless he has studied perspective.... Mr. Davies's book...is the best of its kind, yet published, and the demonstrations are as plain and concise, almost, as the subject will admit." Small wonder, then, that an engineer who was also, though an amateur, a highly-accomplished and, indeed, historically-important architect would have a book like this in his collection. John B. Clarke, Sketches of Successful New Hampshire Men (1882), pp. [9]-13; and Bryant F. Tolles, New Hampshire Architecture: An Illustrated Guide (1979), p. 91.
