London, Eng.: The Strand Magazine , 1894. - The first four [ of six ] installments of the first appearance of the detective charcter " Martin Hewitt " in 4 separate issues of the Strand Magazine - March, April, May & June of 1894 - original powder blue pictorial wraps, in fine to near fine condition & rare thus - two volumes with slivered narrow chip or chips at the fore-edge of the cover, a quarter inch chip at spine base, minor darkening at edges, fourth volume fine, a lovely set needing 2 volumes to complete. Although Arthur Morrison's [ 1863 - 1945 ] detective stories adhere closely to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes formula, they have their own distinctive tone, with well developed characters, often with the edge of the Victorian underclass, or even the criminal class itself. Morrison's stories often seem closer to the newly emerging Anti-hero fiction of the 20th century, although his detective stories remain secondary to Doyle's in this period.
