A clean, hardcover copy in poor condition: cracked joints and hinges, cloth worn and frayed at extremities, corners lightly bumped; tears, stains and wear at end papers, but the remaining text block is clean, several antique pencil signatures on front end papers. New York: McSpedon & Baker, 1850. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 5" x 7 1/2. FAIR/ NO DUST JACKET. FORMER LIBRARY BOOK. 552 pages. Text clean and unmarked except for usual library treatments. Multiple charts and maps throughout, six of them folded and tipped in. Green cloth boards with gilt gilt coat of arms at front, lettered in gilt at spine. Boards rubbed and soiled, corners worn to boards, spine top and tail rubbed. Front hinges starting to crack, back hinge good, text block broken at pages 288-289, all pages remain attached.

Discoloration and staining on some of the pages. Three fold out maps and multiple tables and illustrations throughout. Maps are slightly torn, as well as one of the illustrations. Library markings on the cover pages. Original brown embossed board with light brown lettering on the spine. Gilt seal on the front cover.Cover is torn at the top of the spine, and worn on the bottom of the spine and edges. Library tape on the outside. Binding and hinges are somewhat loose and cracked.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. Missing page corner as depicted, affecting the first front illustration page, affects a small amount of caption text, and the edges of 2 photos. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
