About This Item
Chicago: R.R. Donnelley & Sons, 1886. Hardcover. Fair. frontis, illustrations, 214p. plus (6) unnumbered pages adverts. Original brown cloth. 18 cm. Extremities, joints, etc. rubbed and rather worn. Contents printed on acidic paper which is now browned and fragile (although still intact and not chipped although needing to be handled with care). Rear hinge weak (endpaper split and worn along hinge and the exposed webbing is split at both ends). Kellar is little remembered today but he was a major American magician offering large stage shows during the latter portion of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Much as Houdini sometime later, Kellar was openly dismissive of the legitimacy of spiritualism and openly challenged spiritualists to produce any effect that he could not replicate convincingly -- Chapter XIII. The Spiritualist Excitement at pages 94-105 is devoted to this subject. Most of this book recounts his travels here and there around the globe (South America, Australia, India, Singapore, China, Burma, Thailand, South Africa, Mauritius, New Zealand, Great Britain, etc.).
