About This Item

[Various Places]: [No Publisher], 1960. Typescript drafts, notes and portions of various manuscripts (one with Leary's hand-corrections), and eleven photographs of various sizes. Most of the photographs appear to be taken at the Hitchcock Estate in Millbrook New York, where Leary lived for a time (1963-68) with a group of people and researched and experimented with various drugs, most notably LSD and psilocybin. The images feature Leary and other unidentified people. Richard Alpert (later known as Ram Dass), Arthur Kleps, and Maynard Ferguson lived at the estate, while the numerous visitors and guests included R. D. Laing, Alan Watts, Allen Ginsberg, Charles Mingus, and Helen Merrill. Estate owner William Mellon Hitchcock, heir to the Mellon fortune, subsidized Leary's research and later financed the nation's largest LSD dealers, The Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

Includes: 1. Eleven photographs, mostly b&w, a few in color. Various sizes, the larger ones being approx. 8" x 10". The photos are generally not captioned. Some general wear; all photographs very good or better. One UPI press photo dated 9-3-66 captioned "Leary drinks iced tea as he relaxes with his followers and some guests. His daughter, Susie, goes through some mail." Another undated photo shows Richard Alpert pouring a liquid from a glass into the mouth of a small monkey in his arms. A photo of four men in a pool or hot tub is labeled on the rear, showing Richard Alpert, Gunther Weil (member of the Harvard Psilocybin Project), and Nick Sand, creator of Orange Sunshine acid.

2. Leary, Timothy and Joanna. Neurologic. (Proof Copy?) 24 pp. (4to) stapled yellow wrappers, title and author written in ink on front wrapper. Some wear and soiling to wrappers; very good. [1973].

3.How To Use Your Head. 3 pp. loose blue typewritten sheets, text on one side only. These seem to be notes on proposed lectures, with sections titled "The Scientific Situation," "The Religious Applications," etc. Many of the sections are labeled in ink as "1st Lecture, 2nd Lecture," etc. Some edgewear; very good.

4. An earlier draft of How To Use Your Head. 3 pp. loose typewritten sheets, text on one side only. Leary's hand-corrections to text, repeated correction with the word "application," lines crossed out that would not be in later draft.

5. Three loose typewritten sheets, text on one side only. These sheets are another draft of the lecture topics noted above, with notes and revisions in manuscript. Some light edgewear and toning; very good. Flower doodles on verso, which show these were blank sheets for "Record of Psilocybin Session."

5. Three miscellaneous typewritten sheets that appear to be portions of various works.

These photos and manuscripts evoke a crucial time in Leary's development as well as in the counterculture. The Hitchcock estate was pivotal in creating the counterculture of the 1960s, specifically notions of experimental drug-induced consciousness expansion.
