About This Item
New York:: Barnes & Noble, Inc, 1966.. 1st U.S. Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: paper covered boards; a Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket; the dust jacket is price clipped.. 8vo (about 8.75 inches tall) . Bibliography, index. Description: Includes thirteen b&w illustrations. A study of London in the seventeenth century -- the transition from a small medieval community to an untidy urban sprawl of half a million; the inability of both Crown and City to accept it; the City's medieval sufficiency giving way to overcrowding, destitution, vice, crime and disease on a scale hitherto unknown. The Plague and the Fire brought the situation to a terrible climax. On the ruins a new and better London was built, but most of the schemes of architect and planner were cast aside, either through lack of resources or conflict of interests, and the Greater London they had planned had to wait three hundred years.
