Memoir of American sailor, minister & professor John Smith Sewall (1830-1911) aboard warship U.S.Saratoga --- one of the "Black Ships" of Commodore Matthew C. Perry's Squadron to Japan (1853-1854). As a captain's clerk aboard the Saratoga from 1850-1854, Sewall (author of The Invincible Armada to Japan) kept log of the ship's daily activities. This book was written a half century later, and includes Sewall's commentaries as well as references to later incidents. 291 pgs w/maps & archival photos in 9 chapters followed by Editor's Epilogue.
