Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1856. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition. Complete two volume set. Blind embossed brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine title. Minor dampstain on bottom edges, spine ends chipped and worn, corners rubbed and bumped, a very good copy with some rubbing.

London: David Nutt, 1855. Two volume hardcover (rebound, possibly in silk) set in acceptable condition. No jackets. First edition. The spine is cocked on volume one. Both the hardcovers are edgeworn and mottled; the leading corners are worn and frayed. Previous owner's details inscribed on both front endpapers. The FEP on volume one has a partial split; a portion of the preceding blank page has been cut off on the upper edge. The FEP on volume two is split along the gutter and has been reinforced with tape. The pages are rough cut and uneven. A few creased corners, nicked edges and foxing on the pages throughout. The binding is visible in places, however the pages remain intact, with clear text in both. Good for age. CM. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. Used.

With neat institutional stamp on verso of front free endpaper of first volume, and title verso of second volume. Lewes's biography remains the most fundamental work on the life, work, and milieu of the great German writer. George Henry Lewes was the longtime partner of George Eliot.
