David Nutt,, 1855. 2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with engraved portrait frontispieces (tissue guards present), some light offsetting as usual from frontspieces to titles, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper of first volume; original brown grained cloth, gilt backs, expertly rebacked with old backstrips laid down, an unusually bright, clean, fresh copy in contemporary binding. With neat institutional stamp on verso of front free endpaper of first volume, and title verso of second volume. Lewes's biography remains the most fundamental work on the life, work, and milieu of the great German writer. George Henry Lewes was the longtime partner of George Eliot. VERY SCARCE IN THIS BINDING AND CONDITION.
