One of the few modern studies of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) sometimes called "the first modern sociologist;"an abolitionist and proto-feminist, who wrote on history and political econom, as well as penning several popular children's books. She was highly regarded during her lifetime, and should be so today. This is a Near Fine copy of the First English Edition (it has been reprinted in America). Red cloth binding with spine labeling in brown and gilt. Clean text; 421 pages, indexed, with bibliography and appendices. A few spots on the top edge and hints of bumping, else a Fine copy (an extremely well-produced book). The dustwrapper is unclipped; some wrinkling and nicking, confined to the head and foot of the spine. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus.
