About This Item

New York/London: G.P. Putnam's Sons/Everett & Co., 1906. An early and important biography of the famed explorer and Arabist Somewhat controversial; Penzer refers to it as an "odd jumble of information." This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First American Edition (identical to the English of the same year). Red cloth bindingd with titling on the spine in gilt. Clean text; top-edge is gilt, others rough-cut; illustrated with 64 plates, with frontis both volumes. Volume One is xix, continuing to page 291 (30 plates); Volume Two is xx, continuing to page 291, followed by the Insex and Appendices to xxv (32 plates). Both books are bumped and have chips to the head and foot of the spine. The bright-red binding shows a lot of soiling, and the spines are darkened (although the gilt remains quite readable); page-ends dusty; the rear gutter of Volume Two has cracked but is holding well. Sound copies, but certainly not beauties; a nice bit of cleaning would bring them back for another century of pleasure. . First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
