Second Edition. Hardcover. Published as Vol. V of Jared Sparks' Library of American Biography. Brown patterned cloth titled in gilt on spine. xii, 357pp. Frontispiece illustration of manuscript document signed by Eliot and three others. Title page vignette engraving of Eliot (presumably) and several other colonists meeting with Native Americans in feathered capes and hats. Sabin 25439. Eliot (1604-1690) was an English Puritan who emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony and served as minister in Roxbury. He helped edit the Bay Psalm Book and was a missionary and translator with the Wampanoag and other native peoples; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .
